THE EXPERT’S TIP

It is not right to judge a book by its cover. But sometimes it is unavoidable. Talent, hard work, & dedication is the keys to excelling in our career. However, our appearance, personality & self-confidence contribute largely to our interaction with colleagues & the senior management team. Our expert Parmita Katkar has tips saved especially for us.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Just as the first 10 sec of a video determine the interest & judgement of the viewer. Similarly, first impressions make a perspective about a person’s behavior & professionalism.
  • Always greet everybody with a smile.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Be energetic & cordial
  • Stay positive

BODY LANGUAGE:

Your body language speaks before you do. It depicts your inner feeling through posture, position of sitting, standing or actions. Whatever you feel on the inside be it anger, nervousness or sorrow. No matter what Your body must convey confidence through erect posture and smile on your face. This will prove your professional attitude and ability to handle things. Also, it should not show over-confidence.
  • Keep calm in every situation.
  • Control facial expressions.
  • Always give a firm handshake.

DRESS-UP:

Dressing may vary for the 3 O’s Occupation, Organization & Occasion. Let’s segregate dressing as for Men & Women.

MEN:

  • Solid light-colored shirts in shades like white, grey, blue & pink. Try avoiding large, striped shirts. You can wear light stripped shirts under your coats or keep your tie in contrast with your shirt.
  • For a lighter-colored shirt put on a dark-colored tie & vice versa. Your tie must be positioned exactly touching the tip of the tie with your belt.
  • Match the color of your belt with your shoes.
  • Also match the shade of your socks with the trousers you are wearing.
  • A perfect look for a man to look like a businessman and a gentleman is ‘The Tux’ (Tuxedo). It portrays a man who is always ready to win.

WOMEN:

Women have a comparatively wider range of fashion in the corporate world, though it is said to have limitations.
  • Work wear essentials are versatile Black Trousers Pants. Wear them under anything & everything & rock a stylish powerful look.
  • Dress shirts or blouses might seem basic but paired with the right trousers or skirts and accessories can make a statement. White and pastel pinks & blues work just perfectly.
  • Tailored dresses are the straight keys to unlocking the professional look. These dresses are made with the motive for you to look elegant & powerful at the same time. Tailored dresses can have a versatile behavior but cannot be in loud colors or prints. Solid blacks, whites & greys with a few selective pastel shades like pink or blue.
  • A well-tailored suit might sound expensive but it is a one-time investment for looking the best on a special occasion. It can be used in multiple ways. You can use the Coat above a blouse over black trousers pants or a pencil skirt. Or match your tailored pants with your favorite blouse. You can break the suit in multiple ways & be fashionable without really investing differently in multiple outfits.
  • A well-accessorized woman is ready for every occasion. If you feel over-accessorized take the advice of Coco Chanel, ‘to take one thing off before you leave your house’.
  • When coming to shoes every woman must have 2 pairs of stilettos, one in black and the other one in a nude shade. If heels are not your thing, then go for the same shaded bellies.
If you cannot buy these items at once, it is alright. You can take one thing at a time. You can also wear Indian outfits like a Salwar Kameez or Saree depending upon the industry you work for and at what position you are. While choosing Indian wear concentrate on the moderate dressing. Try avoiding catchy colors & patterns. Comb your hair properly, not too oily or greasy and not too frizzy. Apply a decent amount of makeup without overdoing it. Take care of your body as it is going to be the one representing your thoughts, emotions & actions. Be on time & correctly dressed. Your impression of your peers & seniors matters and is going to be dependent on the way are groomed, dressed, and behaved.
