Choosing a career is one of the most difficult phases in a student’s life. And with the pressure that the kids of the 21st century are facing is immense. A study by the WHO (World Health Organization) shows that 1 in every 4 children in India are under depression which a very high rate and should be taken into consideration. There are different reasons for this student depression discovery. They are Parental pressure and academic pressure faced by the student himself. A parent who might have let go his dream education and career. For example, being a doctor or a pilot or apply for competitive exams. Except their child to fulfil it. Also in other conditions, if a parent is a CA, he might expect his child to become a chartered accountant as well and look after the parental firm and be a medium to accomplish this dream. This pressure works in myriad ways. In India, the best career options are considered to be either Engineering or Medicine, that too based on the gender of the child. If it’s a boy, he’ll be an Engineer; but if it’s a girl, she’ll be a doctor. Now that’s a different topic to discuss it someday later. But there are literally only a few career counsellors who advice you on how to plan your career.

Ask yourself the following question to check where you stand.

  • Would you be happy on choosing a career of your Parent’s choice?
  • Would you choose a career influenced by you friends?
  • Would you choose a career influenced by Sharma ji’s Son?
  • Would you choose a career without your interest or happiness?
  • When a parent asks what you want to do but you are sure that you don’t want to do what your parents want you to do. And also, don’t have an answer to their question?
This means that you are at a state of confusion in choosing your career which is absolutely normal.

In the beginning, think of the result you want yourself at in a few years. And most importantly, the result must consist of Satisfaction and Contentment. No matter the field, be it Science or Arts, give your 100%. Don’t discriminate between science, commerce, and arts. All of them carry the same value and none of them is truncated. IIT & Medical is not the end of the world. Don’t give up on your hope if you don’t advance in the field. There are other options to explore being in the same career. Research for them, inquire and give it a try. The reason why Parents and students prefer science after 10th is that it gives the flexibility to switch fields after 12th class possible. A misconception that many students and parents have i.e., science offers only 2 major divergences after 12th Engineering and Medicine. But that’s not true, you also have a 3rd door open called the research department. Again, see if you like it. The next Career option is Commerce. The Banker’s world but fear not is open to all. Now commerce has a wider variety of options like Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), Business Management, Sales and Marketing, Human Resources and Development, and Entrepreneurship. Finally comes the Arts field. A career option for the innovative and creative ones. History, Political Science, and Geography are the core subjects. You can explore arts through Graphic Designing, Product Designing, Media, Advertisement, Journalism, fashion, Acting, Production, Direction, Photography, and whatnot…Arts is a huge stream with a lot of options to explore at the same time. Here you can do multiple careers at the same time. Renowned personalities in the industry of Motivational Speaking and Career Counselling Sandeep Maheshwari and Gaur Gopal Das have given a few tips that we could practice for better a result.

Sandeep Maheshwari says:

  • Ask yourself about your concentration powers?
  • Whether It’s a yes or a no, face reality and be truthful to yourself.
  • Compare your concentration powers with who will be running the race with you.
  • Look into yourself before starting the race and ask yourself, do I have the strength, effort, and willingness to do hard work?
  • Understand your strengths
  • Keep yourself as your own competitor
  • Finally, be practical and realistic
Gaur Gopal Das says, “The greatest killer of your personal, spiritual and professional growth is conformism.” This means that we give in to what society wants and thinks we should be doing. It is our life, and it is our complete right to choose what we want and what we need. As a parent, you need to understand your ward’s mental health and support him in all ways possible. As parents, you need to stay calm and let them understand and figure out what they have to do with their careers. The outside world is running behind the definition of the ‘perfect success’ of a Well settled job, a salary package of 25 lakh, a skyscraper apartment, a luxurious car, etc. This life exists but is not necessarily suitable for all. And as for the students, you must stay calm through the process. Keeping in mind, whatever happens, happens for the best. Have faith in yourself and be responsible. Be open to options and keep going without losing hope. Hang in there, the road might look scary, but eventually, you will see light. The things that you need to keep in mind are to stay focused, stay calm, keep a stable mindset, and explore different career options. Even if you face failures, don’t lose hope, acceptance of the failures helps in moving on with them. Have a disciplined lifestyle throughout. And know what you are worth and work on it accordingly. And to the panicked moms out there, Take a CHILL PILL!!
