HISTORY OF MEDITATION

‘Meditatrum’ a Latin word meaning ‘to ponder’ gave birth to the English word ‘Meditation’. Although there is an exact record of the time from when meditation is been into practice. It is said that the meditation practices were found in the form of wall Art from Taoist China and Buddhist India. It is also believed that these wall arts were made around 5000 to 3000 BCE, which means the process of meditation existed long ago. The written evidence of meditation was first found in the Vedas around 1500 BC. Let’s take this as a story. Long ago, when the world didn’t have skyscrapers the size of Mountains, there still existed scientists and teachers but with different titles. Also, they have different clothing and way of researching, learning, and teaching. The world was much of peaceful to live. These scientists were called GURU, Saints, Rishi, or Maharishi because of the amount of knowledge they had. They were considered the most important and purest humans of the time. As it was said that had connections with the god and they were mere messengers.

These Gurus and Maharishis had attended the certain stability in their minds about their bodies, behavior, action, emotions, and the working of the world. They sat in a quiet place with folded legs and closed eyes and concentrated on breathing and the entire body. Hours and hours of practice made them calm and observant. They started noticing the effect of breathing and how it makes you feel, then food connecting with thinking and emotions and a lot more. They also realize that our body not only needs food and air but also sleep for us to stay alive. And meditation became the deepest rest of all. They realize the value of a peaceful mind. Hence, they continued to teach and learn more about meditation. Meditation brought the best out in them, it also somehow made them a phenomenal presence.

THE ORIGIN OF YOGA

15000 Years ago, a yogi appeared in the upper regions of the Himalayas. Nobody knew where he came from or from where he belonged, his antecedence was completely unknown. So, a large group of people gathered around him because of his undeniable bright presence. They expected him to say something or do something. And he did nothing, said nothing, simply sat still. Not for days or weeks, but for months. Everybody was expecting him miracles, but nothing happened. We humans might not be aware but our body has to be attended. We need lunch, snack, afternoon tea or coffee. Our body is well attended. Our body is a series of processes, only if you’re attending to them, it’s fine. But, if you don’t, then you see what a trouble it is. The yogi sat there for months, not attending to his body, with no food, no water, not even nature’s call. He simply sat there still. People couldn’t make out if he is alive or dead. The only sign of him being alive was tears of ecstasy dribbling down his cheeks. Now, only seven people were hanging around him. They realized the miracle of him sitting there, as he had transcended physical nature. These 7 people are today called the Sapt Rishis. And the yogi was called Adiyogi. The Sapt Rishi was his first discipline.

When the solicits were shifting, from winter to summer i.e., on 21st June. This is the first time Adiyogi gave his teachings turning southwards with the sun. He started explaining the mechanics of being human. Because of this, the UNO declared 21st June as International Yoga Day.

Yoga is a type of meditation where you focus on your soul and body. The ‘Yoga Sutras of Patanjali define it as “Yoga is the calming down the fluctuations/patterns of consciousness”.

GUIDED MEDITATION

The name itself tells us about this form of Meditation. Here one finds itself being observed and guided under the instructions of an expert. This style is also said to be the easiest style of meditation, as you have to basically follow whatever you have been told and no literal exploration of thoughts is done. You don’t have to deal with complete silence & the doubts that come when practicing this form of yourself. This way, listening & following instructions engage you in an activity rather than letting your mind travel deep inside the ocean of thoughts. As it is the easiest form, everyone can begin from here and advance themselves.

BENEFITS:

  • Eases your stressful situations.
  • Helps in increasing self-awareness.
  • Increases concentration.
  • Increases Listening Capabilities as you have to follow instructions of the guide.
  • Reduces negative thoughts & emotions.
  • Increases patience tolerance ability.

MANTRA MEDITATION

The Mantra Mediation is where you focus on repeating a phrase or a series of words over and over again. Here you have a choice to select your mantra & Get Set Go! But it needs to have positivity, when you repeat a phrase so many times you start believing and behaving that way. The intensity & positivity of the mantra shapes your actions. For example, “I am calm’ is a good choice rather than ‘I do not worry. Though both phrases are positive but the presence of a single ‘not’ decreases its value. The mantra meditation in a way reprograms your body and makes you relearn & become more grateful & cheerful about things in your surroundings. You start noticing small elements & appreciate them when you have a happy & stable mind. This is a great solution if you are looking to correct or relearn a certain issue, then a whole drastic way of living life.

Meditation brings clarity and tranquility and brings the best out of you, and you excel in life. Meditation makes your body and brains faster, smarter, wiser, and stronger. We are all connected, we can create a better world and it starts with just a simple step of closing your eyes. Meditating makes a deeper connection with yourself. If you feel good, you treat and make others around you feel better. And in the type of world, we live in today, there is a scarcity of good people and a healthy environment.
